U16 BKYL Final

Killen 1 – 1 B’mallard aet. (Killen win on pens.)

Killen completed the U16 League and Cup double with this hard fought victory at Omagh Youth Sport on Friday night. Killen began strongly and continued to dominate most of the first half. Andrew Nevin was out quickly to dive at the feet to deny a Killen striker in the opening minutes but both keepers were to have a quiet night as defences were on top throughout the game. Keelan McAleer and ‘Man of the Match’ Graham Young for Killen were in control in midfield but the Mallards almost took the lead against the run of play when a wild slice by a Killen defender saw the ball strike his own crossbar and out to safety. On the stroke of half time Nevin made a point blank save following a goalmouth scramble.

In the second half the Mallards settled and began to create chances. Johnny Hoy broke free but his cross was smothered by the keeper, Matthew Woods headed over from a Lee Walker corner and Charlie Mitten speculative shot from 25 yards just missed the upright. Killen were also creating half chances but despite both teams endeavour the game went to extra time.

The Mallards broke the deadlock in the first period with Walker, Louis Leonard and Bryan Owens exchanged passes in midfield eventually finding Ruairi Corrigan 30 yards out. He beat a player and struck an unstoppable angled right foot shot into the top corner to leave the keeper with no chance. The Mallards appeared comfortable at this stage and Woods had a goal bound header cleared but with four minutes of the second period remaining Killen equalised when Nathan Milligan got on the end of a cross to powerfully head home to send the game to penalties. Killen won the resulting shoot out with John Edgar the only scorer for the Mallards.

Dergview 2 - 4 Ballinamallard Youth 18.09.09 Semi Final

Dergview got of to a flying start in this entertaining game when their a long clearance from Dergview keeper Martin Mongan was missed by the Mallards defence and Dean Catterson lobbed the ball over Andrew Nevin into the empty net. Within 5 minutes Andrew Farrell got the equaliser after good play from Ruairi Corrigan and Charlie Mitten. Both Mitten and Corrigan forced Mongan into fingertip saves but Dergview regained the lead when a low ball into the penalty area was flicked into the net by Catterson for his second. The Mallards regained parity when Corrigan set up Farrell whose shot was parried but Mitten made no mistake from 6 yards. Just before the break Farrell struck the post and John Edgar shot narrowly over but the entertaining half ended 2 – 2.

Dergview opened the second half brightly and a dangerous low cross/shot just missed the upright with the Mallard defence struggling. With 15 minutes gone Mallards took the lead when a lee Walker free kick was met by Corrigan who finished clinically to make the score 3 - 2. For the first time in the game the Mallards took control and Farrell hit the post following a sweeping move involving Corrigan and John Currie. Matthew Woods had a shot from 6 yards brilliantly saved on the line by Mongan who minutes later again denied Farrell. With 10 minutes remaining Currie beat two defenders in the penalty area and laid the ball of to Walker who struck home a fierce shot to secure a 4 – 2 victory and progress to the final against Killen on 9th October.

Lisnaskea 0 – 5 Ballinamallard 04.09.09 Cup Quarter Final

In an evenly contested first 20 minutes both teams played attractive football but without creating any clear cut chances. The opening goal came on 25 minutes when the lively John Currie for the visitors found John Joe Strain on the left and his cross was met by Andrew Farrell who swivelled and drove a left foot shot into the corner. Five minutes later Farrell was brought down in the area and he confidently converted the resulting penalty high into the net. Matthew Woods had a header cleared off the line but just before the break Strain made it 3 – 0 when he latched onto a defensive mistake and his shot, although parried by Robert Wiggins found the net.

The second half began with Lisnaskea dominating possession with James Turley, Colin Kennedy and Ruairi McGrade playing tidy football in midfield but again being unable to threaten the goal. Strain broke free but was denied by a last ditch tackle from Matty Morrison and Lee Walker had a shot well saved but the Mallards got their fourth after a another strong run from Strain. His low cross into the 6 yard box was met by Farrell who scooped home for his hat trick. Despite the scoreline, possession was being evenly shared and Lisnaskea’s McGrade’s almost opened for them but his effort went narrowly over the bar. Mallard’s keeper Andrew Nevin was quickly out at the feet of Andy Little to deny him as the game opened up. Bryan Owens had a 25 yards free kick brilliantly tipped away by the excellent Wiggins but on the stroke of full time Stephen Bruce was upended and Farrell converted to leave the final score 5 – 0.

B’mallard ‘A’ 1 – 6 B’mallard ‘B’ 29.05.09

An under strength ‘B’ team almost took a surprise lead in the opening minute when a defensive mix up let in Adam Wallace but Andrew Nevin redeemed himself to block the resulting shot. The opening 20 minutes was closely fought until Bryan Owens broke the deadlock with a superb 20 yard shot into the roof of the net. Ten minutes later the ‘B’s were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. The resulting kick from Wallace was parried by Nevin in the ‘A’ goal but Ryan Sandford quickly followed up to equalise. Just before the break Johnny Hoy put the ‘A’s back in front with a powerful shot to give keeper Nathan Wallace no chance.

Two goals in the opening 5 minutes in the second half effectively finished the game. Hoy supplied the pass for Andrew Farrell to nudge the ball past Wallace and John Currie set up Hoy for the ‘A’s fourth goal. On 65 minutes Hoy again did well on the left and supplied a perfect pass for Konrad Sak to finish from 6 yards and in the dying minutes Hoy completed his hat trick when he finished from a tight angle.

B’mallard U16 1 – 0 Strathroy Harps 22.05.09

B’mallard edged out a stubborn Harps on Friday night to take 3 valuable points in a bad tempered game with few chances. Most of these were created by the Mallards with the lively John Joe Strain and Johnny Hoy going close on several occasions and at the back Matthew Woods, Louis Leonard and Charlie Mitten were on hand to snuff out any threat. In attack, Woods came close with two headers from set pieces but with the bookings tally rising the halftime score remained 0 – 0.

In the second half the Mallards pressed forward and got their reward on 55 minutes. Ruairi Corrigan collected the ball in midfield and his precision pass found Strain who swivelled past a defender and his sweet left foot shot beat the diving keeper. Mark Wilson was set through but his effort went just wide of the post and Niall Wallace had two shots from distance well saved but there was to be no further scoring.

Mountjoy 6 – 0 B’mallard 15.05.09

B’mallard cruised to a 5 – 0 half time lead with a superb display on Friday night. They opened the scoring following a dazzling run by John Currie and the resulting shot from Ruairi Corrigan was deflected into the net by John Edgar. Matthew Woods headed in from a Charlie Mitten corner and Corrigan made it 3 – 0 when he got on the end of an Adam Davison through ball and smashed the ball just inside the post. Corrigan got his second after receiving the ball following a strong run from Bryan Owens and when Mitten was brought down in the penalty area Corrigan comfortably dispatched the resulting penalty to leave the half time score 5 – 0.

The Mallards continued to dominate possession in the second period but it took until the 60th minute to add to their score. Corrigan took an in swinging corner which was headed on by Owens to Woods, who side footed home from 6 yards. In a rare threat to the Mallard goal, Mountjoy were unlucky to see a header come back off the cross bar but it was the Mallards who continued to create chances. Numerous efforts mostly from Owens and Corrigan went close but the Mallards were unable to add to the scoring to leave the final score 6 – 0.

B’mallard 4 – 0 Fivemiletown 08.05.09

B’mallard were in control of this game from the start and within the opening minutes Lee Walker saw his looping shot tipped onto the bar by the excellent Cameron Crawford who was to have a busy evening. This was quickly followed by further saves from efforts from Ruairi Corrigan, John Joe Strain and Walker as the Mallards domination continued. The Mallards took the lead on 25 minutes when Strain gathered possession on the half way line, his pace took him into the penalty area and he slid the ball past Crawford. Just before the break Corrigan’s goal bound header was well saved by Crawford at the expense of a corner. Johnny Hoy took the corner and this was met with an unstoppable header by Matthew Woods.

It was more of the same in the second half with Crawford and defender Gary Stewart coming to the rescue for Fivemiletown on several occasions. The Mallards made it 3 – 0 on 65 minutes when Walker made a strong run on the right wing and his precision pass was met by Matthew McConkey who placed the ball into the net from 10 yards. Adam Davison was denied by a terrific diving save on the goal line but with 5 minutes remaining John Edgar got on the score sheet with a powerful drive into the corner of the net to leave the final score 4 – 0.

Enniskillen Town 2 – 3 Ballinamallard 01.05.09

B’mallard overcame a stubborn E’killen Town on Friday and but for poor finishing and good goalkeeping the scoreline would have been more emphatic. In the opening 15 minutes Ruairi Corrigan fierce drive struck the crossbar and Joe McGovern made two good saves from John Joe Strain and Mark Wilson. At the other end Andrew Nevin was relieved to see a shot go narrowly over the bar. With 30 minutes gone Strain headed against the bar but minutes later he opened the scoring when he latched onto a through ball from Wilson, rounded McGovern and stroked the ball home. Wilson had a chance to increase the lead before the break but was forced wide by McGovern when one on one.

After the break Andrew Farrell was brought down in the penalty area and he converted the penalty at the second attempt after a fine save from McGovern. The Mallards were pegged back to 2 - 1 following a terrific 25 yards strike from Jody McManus. Despite dominating possession the Mallards were wasteful in front of goal but with 10 minutes remaining they looked to have made the game safe when Strain headed on to Corrigan and his powerful run and shot made it 3 – 1. In the dying minutes Eamonn McCaffrey for Town got on the end of a long ball to deflect the ball past Nevin to leave a nervy end to the game for the Mallards.

Ballinamallard Youth 6 – 0 Dergview 18.04.09

Ballinamallard cruised to a 6 – 0 victory but the opening 10 minutes were dominated by Dergview who had their opponents pinned into their own half but their failure to convert a number of half chances was to prove costly. Following on from his 4 goals last week Johnny Hoy broke the deadlock with a powerfully struck left foot shot from outside the area. Minutes later Dergview were unlucky when a free kick crashed off the Mallard’s bar and away to safety. On 15 minutes Hoy had a header kicked off the line and this was followed by a good save following another Hoy effort. Mark Wilson opened his account with a header from a Ruairi Corrigan cross and Hoy got his second after good interlink play from Andrew Farrell and Wilson as the Mallards cruised to a half time 3 – 0 lead.

Hoy got his hat trick with an exquisite left foot lob from the edge of the penalty area from another Corrigan through ball and on 50 minutes Wilson drove a fierce shot through a packed penalty area to get his second. On 65 minutes he completed his hat trick with a shot into the top corner to round off a fine individual performance. The Mallards had numerous chances to increase the lead with the pick being Lee Walkers shot which was tipped onto the bar. A solid partnership between central defenders Ben Brown and Matthew Woods ensured the Mallards kept another clean sheet and record a 6 – 0 victory.

Ardstraw 2 – 4 B’mallard 10.04.09

In one of the few matches to survive the poor weather B’mallard secured the three points with an impressive display. As expected the opening period was a close affair but the Mallards gained momentum and Johnny Hoy gave an indication of what was to come with two goal bound efforts being blocked and another going just over the bar. Hoy did open the scoring after good work on the left by John Edgar and Bryan Owens and Hoy’s shot had enough power to beat the keeper from 20 yards. Ruairi Corrigan and Hoy again had shots saved but on the stroke of half time Ardstraw got an unlikely equaliser with their first attempt on goal. A free kick was blocked by the Mallard wall but rebounded to an Ardstraw forward and his sweetly struck shot found the top corner.

With 10 minutes gone in the second half the Mallards regained the lead. A flowing move started with Lee Walker deep in his own half and after exchanging passes with Edgar, Andy Farrell was set free on the left and his accurate cross was met by Hoy who netted his second. Farrell had a shot well saved and Edgar hit the post before Hoy nabbed his hat trick on 70 minutes following another flowing move which again involved Edgar and Farrell. Another accurate ball from Farrell from the by line was stroked home by Hoy from 6 yards. It was all B’mallard and when Edgar’s shot was saved the rebound inevitable fell to Hoy who finished well from outside the penalty area. With the last kick of the game Ardstraw got a consolation goal with an unstoppable 20 yard free kick.

Windmill Stars 1 – 2 Ballinamallard Youth 18.04.09

B’mallard showed the effects of the previous night’s match with a sluggish first half in which they barely strung a series of passes together. Matthew McConkey came closest with a header over the bar and Johnny Hoy’s shot just missed the upright but Niall Wallace and Adam Davison in defence were constantly under pressure. Windmill opened the scoring when a ball, not properly cleared was hooked over Andrew Nevin and into the net. Nevin made another good save with his feet and John Currie had an effort tipped over but the Mallards were fortunate to enter the break only 1 – 0 down after this dismal performance.

A much improved B’mallard emerged from the break with McConkey again coming close with another header and play being condensed into Windmill’s half with a number of half chances being created. With 5 minutes remaining the Mallards got the deserved equaliser and it was Hoy who maintained his recent scoring streak with a stunning strike from outside the penalty area after good work by Charlie Mitten and Edgar. Some frantic defending from Windmill appeared to have denied the Mallards a victory but in the last minute a Wallace corner was met by Edgar at the back post and his towering header found the net to reward an excellent second half performance.

Moneyslane 3 – 1 B’mallard 28.03.09

Wasteful finishing, especially in the first half led to this surprising defeat to lowly Moneyslane. Following a tight opening 10 minutes the Mallards took control and shots reigned down on the Moneyslane goal. John Edgar, Bryan Owens, Lee Walker and Andrew Farrell all had efforts saved but too often the decisive final ball was missing as good opportunities came to nothing. Owens found the net with a tremendous volley but this was ruled out for offside. With 10 minutes remaining Edgar opened the scoring after a goal keeping error but the expected goal avalanche didn’t come and on the stroke of half time Andrew Nevin pulled off a good save but the ball fell to a opponent who chipped into the open net to score an unlikely equalise.

With the wind at their backs the second half was more even but again the Mallards were creating the chances with Owens having a fierce shot parried, John Currie just failing to connect from close in and Edgar having several shots go narrowly over. With 15 minutes remaining Moneyslane took the lead after a good passing move resulted with the ball being slipped under Nevin from close in. The Mallards were getting into some good position but again wayward shooting and a poor final ball were letting them down. With minutes remaining Moneyslane ensured the 3 – 1 victory with the ball being forced over the line despite a gallant effort from Louis Leonard.

Portadown 2 – 4 B’mallard aet M.U.Cup 21.03.09

B’mallard twice had to come from behind before finally overcoming Portadown in a thrilling Mid Ulster cup match on Saturday. Portadown took the lead on 10 minutes with an unstoppable volley from the edge of the penalty area but within 5 minutes Johnny Hoy levelled from the spot after Andrew Farrell had been brought down by the keeper. There was no further scoring and few chances between the two evenly matched teams before half time.

The Mallards were caught cold on the break seconds after the restart and fell 2 – 1 behind with a well taken goal. For the first time in the game the Mallards dominated play and were unlucky when Konrad Sak’s effort was blocked and John Edgar’s follow up was deflected over the bar. The excellent Ruairi Corrigan hit a free kick over the bar and Farrell’s shot was tipped onto the bar and away to safety as the Mallards pressed for an equaliser. With 10minutes left the ball fell to Edgar who hit a superb strike from 25 yards in off the underside of the bar to level again. Hoy had a shot parried away for a corner and Louis Leonard’s header drifted over but in the final minute Andrew Nevin pulled off a brilliant one handed save to force extra time.

At the start of extra time Portadown wasted a great chance to again take the lead but this would prove to be their last opportunity as the Mallards finished strongly. The lively Farrell gave the Mallards the lead when he latched onto Lee Walker’s pass through the static defence and slotted the ball under the keeper. The Mallards controlled the remainder of the game and Farrell got his second after closing down the hesitant keeper and scrambling the ball home.

B’mallard Yth 5 – 0 Sunnyside 14.03.09.

B’mallard took all 3 points in a windswept game at Dungannon on Saturday. Right from the start the Mallards took control with the midfield of John Currie, Bryan Owens, Andy Farrell and Konrad Sak dominating possession and winning most of the 50/50 balls. Despite this, few clear cut chances were being created and it wasn’t until just before half time that the Mallards got the breakthrough. Farrell and Currie combined well on the left and John Edgar took his chance from the edge of the penalty area to make the half time score 1 – 0.

The Mallards had more of a cutting edge in the second half with Sak setting up Currie for a good finish within minutes of the restart. Lee Walker had a shot headed off the line and Edgar hit a post before the Mallards added a third following a flowing more. Stephen Bruce in midfield passed wide to Mark Glenn whose cross was met by Edgar with a sweet left foot shot. Glenn got on the end of a Johnny Hoy cross to make it 4 – 0 and Edgar secured the 5 – 0 victory and his hat trick in the dying minutes after being put through by Glenn.

B’mallard 0 – 2 Donegal Celtic 28.02.09

Donegal Celtic went into this game at Craigavon as strong favourites against a severely under strength B’mallard team but with 15 minutes gone Celtic had been restricted to a few long range shots. The Mallards were fortunate not to go behind after a glaring miss from a few yards out but gradually grew in confidence and Johnny Hoy almost opened the scoring with a 25 yard free kick which squirmed under the keeper but away to safety. On 25 minutes this bad tempered affair erupted with a Celtic player being sent off for a head butt. Immediately following this a Hoy free kick was met by Niall Wallace whose header went narrowly wide. Bryan Owens shot wide as the Mallards poured forward and Celtic had a second player sent off when Lee Walker was cynically brought down when through on goal. Just before the break Hoy provided a cross from the right but Owens header missed the target.

Five minutes into the second half Hoy’s 30 yard free kick went over the bar but despite the Mallards numerical advantage Celtic came more into the match and scored the opener with a header after poor marking at a corner. The game descended into a messy affair in an increasingly hostile atmosphere and there was a stoppage as Owens needed treatment for a facial injury. Andrew Sheridan in nets made a good block with his feet but with 10 minutes remaining a ball across the Mallard back line was intercepted and a good strike gave Celtic their second which sealed the game. The game also included 3 other yellow cards to Celtic but to their credit the Mallards maintained their discipline.

B’mallard 4 – 1 Moneyslane 14.02.09

B’mallard got back to winning ways after the enforced break with this comprehensive victory over Moneyslane and but for the woodwork the score would have been more emphatic. On 5 minutes the lively Lee Walker shot into the side netting and minutes later he struck the post with a back post header. John Joe Strain and Walker were a constant threat up front and Strain was unlucky when he saw hit 18 yard shot hit the inside of the post and bounce across the goal line and away to safety. Walker again hit the side netting from a difficult angle and Louis Leonard’s header from the impressive Niall Wallace’s delivery just missed the target. With half time approaching the Mallards got the breakthrough when a through ball from Charlie Mitten found Strain and he comfortably beat the last defender and stroked the ball under the out coming keeper.

Seconds after the restart Moneyslane got an unlikely equaliser following a back post header from a corner. Within a minute the lead was restored when Wallace latched onto a goalkeeping mistake to hammer home from 6 yards. On 10 minutes Andy Farrell went narrowly wide and at the other end Andrew Nevin was forced into making his first save of the match from a powerful volley. With 15 minutes remaining Adam Davison’s towering header from another dangerous Wallace corner gave the Mallards a 3 – 1 lead. Like Strain in the first half Farrell was unlucky not to score when his powerful 20 yard dive hit the inside of the post and bounced across the goal line to safety. In the dying minutes the hard working Bryan Owens was brought down in the penalty area and he successfully converted the spot kick to give the Mallards a deserved 4 – 1 win.

St Marys U16’s 0 – 0 B’mallard 29.11.08

Poor finishing and refereeing resulted in the Mallards dropping 2 points in a game they dominated from the start. In the opening minute Lee Walker intercepted a back pass but his shot hit the post with the keeper stranded. A well worked free kick saw the St Mary’s keeper tip over a Johnny Hoy shot and Louis Leonard also brought out a good save. Ben Brown, Niall Wallace and Charlie Mitten were rarely troubled in defence and Walker and Brian Owens on the wings were always a threat. Five minutes before the break a Walker corner was met with a towering header by Hoy into the roof of the net but this was harshly ruled out for pushing by the St Marys referee. John Edgar and Walker both had further efforts saved but for all their dominance the half time score remained 0 – 0.

St Mary came more into the game in the second half but the Mallards continued to create and miss opportunities. John Currie’s cross from the left was met by Owens but his shot from 6 yards went over the bar with the keeper well beaten. In the space of 10 minutes the Mallards were awarded two free kicks in dangerous positions but Edgar and Owens both failed to test the keeper. At the other end a St Marys free kick narrowly missed the post. Several offside decisions went against the Mallards when in dangerous positions and they again hit the post with 10 minutes remaining following a goalmouth scramble. Despite their domination they were unable to break the deadlock and the score finished 0 - 0.

Limavady 1 – 0 Ballinamallard 08.11.08

B’mallard U16’s gave a battling performance with a depleted squad but came up short against a physically stronger Limavady on Saturday. Limavady dominated the early play and took the lead on 10 minutes after a dangerous cross into the B’mallard penalty area was inadvertently deflected by Andrew Farrell into his own net. Limavady surged forward with Ben Brown, Adam Davison, Charlie Mitten and Niall Wallace at the back remaining solid under constant pressure. It was 20 minutes before the first threatening Mallards attack and it was the lively John Joe Strain who dragged his shot just wide of the post. In the remaining 10 minutes of the half the possession was shared but neither side could find the net.

A much improved second half display saw the Mallards come more into the game and the Limavady keeper did well to keep out a deflected shot. Farrell was pushed further forward and chances were being created. A Konrad Sak cross hit the angle and Strain had shots blocked but Limavady’s speedy breaks were a constant threat and from one of these Andrew Nevin did well to tip a close range volley over the bar. Further injuries to Davison and Strain blunted the Mallards attack but in the final minute they thought they had snatched a point with a strong appeal after the ball appeared to go over the line but to their dismay a goal was not awarded.

Armagh Celtic 1 - 6 Ballinamallard Youth 01.11.08

B’mallard took only three minutes to take the lead in this game which they dominated for all but 10 minutes of this game. It came from a long kick out from Andrew Sheridan which was headed on by Konrad Sak who was making his first start for the Mallards. The ball fell invitingly to John Joe Strain who beat the last defender and stroked the ball home. The Mallards got their second when Sak again set up Strain who hammered home from a tight angle. At this stage the Mallards were completely in control and it was no surprise when they scored their third with another through ball from Sak. The Celtic keeper was first to the ball but his clearance was charged down by Strain and he reacted quickly to knock in the rebound and make the half time score 3 – 0.

Armagh Celtic started much the better and within a minute they got their equaliser with a fierce volley from 20 yards. The game swung Celtic’s way and they should have scored again when a free kick fell to an unmarked striker but his shot from 10 yards went over the bar. Ten minutes into the second half keeper Andrew Sheridan tipped another shot onto the bar before the Mallards regained control. Sak deservedly got on the score sheet with a tap in after the keeper could only parry a Johnny Hoy shot and within 10 minutes he got his second in a similar fashion following a John Currie shot which was also parried. Strain became the provider after a strong run and cross from the right was met by Currie who tapped in from 6 yards to make the final score 6 – 1.

Ballinamallard Youth 3 - 0 Sunnyside 18.10.08

Ballinamallard Youth travelled to the Kernan playing fields, Craigavon for the meeting with Sunnyside. From the start the Mallards were the much livelier team, quickly stringing together some neat passing moves. Farrell and Owens dominated midfield and constantly pushed the ball forward to the front pairing of Strain and Hoy. Unfortunately Hoy was to have a frustrating day as several of his efforts missed the target. Strain’s shooting boots were firmly on his feet and there were only 10 minutes on the clock when he opened the scoring. The goal came courtesy an excellent 50 yard cross field pass by Mitten into the path of Strain who easily took the ball round Sunnyside’s defence before slotting it into the bottom right hand corner of the net. The Mallards second goal came 3 minutes later as Strain’s volley flipped off the crossbar into the path of the predatory Farrell who drilled it into the back of the net. Ballinamallard continued to dominate the play with Walker and Wallace creating opportunities for the forwards. But wasted efforts by Strain, Owens and Hoy failed to reward their dominance. Sunnyside defended resolutely and tried to create some chances for themselves however McConkey and Brown dealt with any threat comfortably.

After the restart the Mallard’s inability to convert their dominance and chances in the first half could have proved very costly as Sunnyside had a superb strike on the Mallards goal. Fortunately Keeper Sheridan pulled off an outstanding save to deny Sunnyside their opener. Currie and Walker worked hard in midfield but further misses by Houlihan and Owens added to the Mallards frustration in front of goal. The game was finally put to rest mid way through the second half when the hard working Owens eventually broke his goal famine after collecting an exquisite pass from Walker. Overall this was a solid performance from Ballinamallard with the excellent midfield four controlling the game. The back four also worked well and McConkey showed his versatility with a comfortable performance at centre back partnering the ever reliable Ben Brown. However Ballinamallard will need to reflect on their extravagance in front of goal as against stiffer opposition they would have been severely punished.

Craigavon City 2 - 1 Ballinamallard Youth 05.10.08

Ballinamallard travelled to Tannaghmore on Saturday morning after winning the Brendan Keogh U-15 League Cup the previous night in Omagh. However it was an injury hit team that travelled with 7 of the squad missing. A reshuffle saw several players in positions which they would not normally play in and Conrad Zak, Alonso Houlihan and Ronan McDonough all make the starting team. Craigavon was a physical outfit but composed tackling by McDonough and McConkey at the back saw off some early opportunities for Craigavon. Sheridan was installed at left back and Mitten moved across to partner McConkey at centre back. The team was dealt a further injury blow when Hoy who had started brightly, showing early promise had to be replaced as a result of a hip injury after 7 minutes. Fortunately Walker was available and slotted into Hoy’s midfield role. The early exchanges were dominated by Craigavon but determined play by the Mallards and strong runs by Sheridan from left back saw them weather the early storms. However a defensive error saw the ball poorly cleared and a Craigavon forward fired the ball into the back of the net. The Mallards were galvanized into action and excellent passing interchanges between Walker, Strain and Houlihan saw them threaten the Craigavon goal. The pressure was justly rewarded when Houlihan neatly side- stepped two Craigavon backs to slot the ball calmly past the Keepers left. Back on level par the Mallards continued to press but the final clinical passes needed to reward their effort broke down as tired legs were unable to control the ball in the Craigavon box.

The second half again started brightly for Ballinamallard with the breeze at their backs. However in spite of good forward ball by the back four Zak, Houlihan and Strain were unable to take advantage of it. Wallace, Walker and Currie worked extremely hard at midfield coping with the Craigavon attacks but a further defensive error saw Craigavon take the lead mid way through the second half. Chris Woods came on for Conrad Zak and made an impact up front as he proved quite a handful for the Craigavon backs. The ‘never say die’ attitude of Ballinamallard continued apace but the efforts were to find no reward and Craigavon ran out eventual winners 2 – 1 in a match which on a different day Ballinamallard would have comfortably claimed.

Glenavon 1 – 1 B’mallard @ Tannaghmore 27.09.08

The opening exchanges were physical but fair with both defences ensuring that chances were limited. With 20 minutes gone a Matthew McConkey precision cross to the unmarked John Joe Strain gave the Mallards their first chance but Strain’s header was well saved. This was quickly followed by a Lee Walker volley which narrowly missed the upright. Although possession was shared equally the Mallards were creating the best chances and a Chris Sheridan low drive pulled out the best in the Glenavon keeper. On 25 minutes good build up play between John Currie and Sheridan gave Strain a chance and his 20 yard curling shot found the corner of the net. On the stroke of half time Andrew Nevin made a terrific save low to his left to push the ball out but in the ensuing scramble Niall Wallace was alleged to have fouled a Glenavon player and the resulting penalty was dispatched to leave the half time score 1 – 1.

Both teams had chances to score in the second half with Glenavon missing a good chance and Brian Owens seeing his cross kicked off the line. Strain was denied again by outstanding goalkeeping and a dangerous Ronan McDonough shot was deflected for a corner. Although Nevin in the Mallard goal had a quiet game he was called into action in the dying minutes to deny Glenavon with a superb save.

Newry Celtic 2 – 3 B’mallard @ LPP 20.09.08

B’mallard edged out Newry Celtic in an exciting match which was a game of two halves with the Mallards in total control in the first. John Joe Strain opened the scoring after 20 minutes when he received through ball from Lee Walker. He beat the last defender wide on the left and scored with a shot from a difficult angle. Shortly after he scored a similar goal after a fine pass from Chris Sheridan. The Mallards were causing problems on Celtic’s right side with Niall Wallace at left back setting up many of the attacks. Celtic were thrown a lifeline just before the break when awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. The kick wasn’t dealt with and the ball was scrambled home from six yards.

Ten minutes into the second half John Currie’s penetrating cross field ball was gathered by Sheridan and he drove the ball low into the net to regain the two goal margin. Walker, Johnny Hoy and Scott Byers all missed good chances to increase the lead and these looked costly when Celtic pulled one back when a free kick was deflected past Andrew Sheridan. It was backs to the wall in the remaining ten minutes with the Mallards unable to get out of their own half. Ben Brown in the centre of a reshuffled defence was again outstanding and his experience helped the Mallards survive a few scares and see out the game.

Windmill Stars 1 – 1 Mallards @ Kernan 13.09.08

B’mallard U16’s opened their Mid Ulster campaign with a hard fought draw against Windmill Stars. Andrew Farrell‘s shot over the bar after 20 minutes was quickly followed by a low drive from Lee Walker which narrowly missed the post. The Mallards were creating the chances and playing good football but Windmill threatened on the break and central defenders Charlie Mitten and Ben Brown both made vital interceptions. On the half hour mark Farrell broke from midfield and brought a good save from the keeper but at half time the score remained 0 – 0.

Ten minutes into the second half the Mallards scored the opening goal when a long ball from Ronan McDonough was gathered by Johnny Hoy. His pace and strength took him past the last defender and his powerful shot beat the keeper. Matthew McConkey almost got on the end of a cross at the back post and at the other end a Windmill striker scuffed his shot and Andrew Nevin gather comfortably. Konrad Sak had a shot from the edge of the penalty area go wide but in the final minute Windmill scored an unlikely equaliser. A cross from the right was met by an outstretched foot in the six yard box and the ball struck the underside of the bar and in to give Windmill a share of the points.

21.02.09 Ballinamallard Youth 0 - 1 Tristar @ Bawnacre.

Round 1:

13.12.08 Donemana 1 - 5 Ballinamallard youth @ Ballymagorry

Hoy (2), Edgar (2) & Walker.

Ballinamallard 0 -1 Tristar

B’mallard failed to reach the last 16 of the N. Ireland cup despite a gutsy performance at the Bawnacre. The opening 10 minutes was a tight affair with little goalmouth action but plenty of committed tackling. On 15 minutes John Joe Strain brought the best out of the Tristar keeper with a stinging volley which was well held. Shortly after this Tristar won a free kick 25 yards from the Mallard goal. They sprung the offside trap and a looping header dropped wide of Andrew Nevin and into the net. The remainder of the half saw possession shared but the Mallards were making the best chances. Niall Wallace had a volley go wide as did Andy Farrell’s header from a dangerous Johnny Hoy cross. Lee Walker had a shot go narrowly over and just before break he brought a good save from the excellent keeper.

It was more of the same after the break with Bryan Owens having a shot saved and Wallace’s drive going narrowly wide. Farrell latched onto a Louis Leonard through ball but saw his effort saved. With 15 minutes remaining Nevin was forced into a good save low to his right as the Mallards pressed forward in search of an equaliser. With two at the back the Mallards were open to a series of breaks but Ben Brown and Charlie Mitten were superb in protecting Nevin’s goal. In the dying seconds Strain put Farrell through but his shot was blocked on the line and in the ensuing scramble the keeper eventually gathered the ball to deny the Mallards a deserved equaliser.

Donemana 1 – 5 B’mallard

B’mallard progressed to the second round of the N.Ireland cup with this comfortable victory at Donemana. The game was effectively over after 20 minutes when the Mallards raced to a four goal lead with Johnny Hoy scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. In the opening seconds Hoy burst through the hesitant defence but pulled his shot wide. Minutes later an identical break saw him control a long ball on his chest and get the opener with a low shot to the keeper’s right. With 10 minutes on the clock he scored his second with a shot from 20 yards which squirmed through the keeper’s hands. The Mallards were attacking at will with Lee Walker and Louis Leonard both having efforts saved. Dangerous corners from Niall Wallace were causing problems and John Edgar benefited from slackness in the defence to bundle one home. On 20 minutes Edgar again rose above the defence to head in from another corner to make the score 4 – 0. Just before the break and with the Mallards continually pressing they were caught on the break and Donemana pulled one back.

The second half continued in the same vein with the Mallards in complete control on an increasingly heavy pitch. They carved out a catalogue of good chances and but for some glaring misses would have hit double figures such was their dominance. With 10 minutes remaining they did score when Walker received the ball wide on the right, his pace took him past the last defender and he coolly stroked the ball to the side of the out coming keeper to make the final score 1 - 5. This was a polished performance by the Mallards but against stiffer opposition in latter rounds of the cup their poor finishing would prove costly.

Lisnaskea Rovers 2 – 3 Ballinamallard Youth - 03.10.08 Cup Final

Ballinamallard started the match without their outstanding centre back Louis Leonard who had his appendix removed earlier in the week. They were also without their powerful centre midfielder, John Edgar, who was on duty with the Northern Ireland in the U-15 Victory Shield Trophy against England in Ballymena. However the strength of successive Ballinamallard teams is their squad system and the U-15’s had replacements ready to take up the challenge. Ballinamallard started brightly and from the kick-off a through ball to Hoy signaled his cup ambitions as his shot from outside the box flew just wide of the Rover’s left goal post. This initial pressure saw Ballinamallard dominate the opening minutes with an array of slick passing between Sheridan, Hoy and Owens in mid-field and neat little through passes to Strain who proved a handful in and around the Rover’s box. The Mallards pressure was rewarded after 7 minutes when a superbly executed move saw Hoy lay off the ball to Curry in the Rover’s box. Curry neatly rounded full back Morrison and found the waiting Sheridan who hammered the ball into the bottom right of the Lisnaskea net to open the scoring.

However this jolted Lisnaskea into action and Mc Grath started to make their presence felt as they dominated the midfield aerial battle and put good ball through to the front pairing. Their effort was justifiably rewarded on 14 minutes when a defensive error between Mitten, Brown and Davison at the back failed to clear their lines and the ball landed at the feet of Kennedy just inside the box. Kennedy was alert to the gift and his superbly executed left foot strike found the top right hand corner of the net well out of the reach of Nevin’s dive.

The Mallards back four of Mitten, Davison, Brown and Corrigan were also rock solid with stand in centre back Davison alert to every threat. His deft pass to the waiting Corrigan saw one of the Mallards best moves of the match as Corrigan found Sheridan waiting on the sideline. Sheridan rounded two tackles and passed to Farrell who shot just wide of the top right. The resulting kick-out saw Andy Farrell win the breaking ball at midfield. He combined with Owens and put a slick pass through to Hoy who took on Morrison as the Rovers skipper was alert to the danger. However Hoy’s dummy saw the ball reach Strain and his kick was parried wide by the Keeper. The resulting corner from Farrell found Sheridan’s head but with his back to goal all he could do direct it away from the goal where it was seized by the waiting Hoy. Meanwhile Davison had taken up an excellent position at the edge of the box and Hoy alert to the opportunity put the ball at his feet. Davison’s first time shot saw the ball rocket into the back of the net. This put Ballinamallard in front at half time with the prospect of another excellent 35 minutes football for the spectators to savour in the second half.

Ballinamallard started the second half with Walker replacing Curry on the right hand side of midfield. From the kick off a superb tackle by the highly composed Corrigan at left back saw him deprive Colin Kennedy of a chance to equalize the scores early in the half. A few minutes later Andrew Nevin was called into action as a brilliant pass saw Brown wrong footed and McGrath have a shot on goal. For the Mallards Bryan Owens excellent tackling around midfield constantly thwarted the Rovers attacks and his alertness in capturing the ball saw him then take on and beat two defenders before calmly passing the ball to Hoy. Sheridan collected Hoy’s pass before releasing to Strain. Hoy meanwhile had continued his run and was perfectly positioned to take Strain’s clever pass before striking the ball with his trademark flamboyance into the back of the net. Lisnaskea piled on the pressure and Mc Grath reclaimed midfield and started to get the ball through to Kennedy. The Mallards were equal to the challenge and stout defending by Davison and Brown at the centre and Mitten and Corrigan on the wings saw the wave of attacks snuffed out. However the match took a dramatic turn when a face injury to Davison saw him leave the field for 5 minutes for medical attention. An error by Nevin from the kick out saw a 9 man Ballinamallard defend a free kick on the right hand side of their penalty box. McGrath stood up to take the kick and buried the ball in the top left hand corner of the net to leave the score 3 – 2 with 4 minutes of normal time remaining. However shortly after the restart Sheridan went down with a double leg cramp and failing to recover from treatment had to be substituted by Wallace. The tension was increased when the Referee indicated that there was to be 10 minutes of injury time added on at the end of normal fulltime. The Mallards were facing a significant battle as Bryan Owens had to be replaced, again as a result of cramp, by McConkey and Lisnaskea with their tails in the air could scent another goal. However in spite of wave after wave of attack the Mallards clung on to their slender lead and ran out champions for the third year in a row.

In the presentation ceremony the League Chairman Davy Wheeler congratulated both teams on their epic encounter and acclaimed the match ‘as one of the best finals to have been played in the Brendan Keogh Youth Cup.

Killen 1 – 2 B’mallard - Cup Semi-final 17.09.08

B’mallard U15’s progressed to the BKYL cup final following this 2 – 1 victory away to Killen. Killen were penned into their own half for most of the opening period with Christopher Sheridan and Lee Walker both testing the keeper. The opening goal came on 20 minutes when a Ruairi Corrigan ball from defence was hooked forward by Walker to John Joe Strain. He rounded the last defender and the Killen keeper could only parry the powerful shot into the net. Minutes later a Johnny Hoy free kick went over the bar and at the other end Andrew Sheridan did well to hold onto a 20 yard drive. On the half hour the Mallards doubled their lead with Walker and Strain again combining well and putting Strain through. He rounded the keeper and although forced wide his left foot shot from a difficult angle found the net. Just before the break a Killen free kick from the edge of the penalty area narrowly missed the post.

In the second half the industrious Andrew Farrell had a header saved and Strain saw his shot tipped round the post. With 10 minutes remaining Andrew Sheridan pulled off a terrific shot low to his left from a free kick as Killen came more into the game. Killen did get one back from a 20 yard shot which Sheridan failed to hold and the Mallards troubles continued when they went down to ten men as Farrell was carried off injured. Despite the increasing Killen pressure some resolute defending from the Mallards ensured they secured a place in the final.

Ballinamallard Youth 5 – 1 Dergview 25.06.08

B’mallard romped to a 5 – 1 victory with Johnny Hoy scoring all five in a fine individual performance. His opener on 15 minutes came after a Chris Sheridan flick which left him one on one with the keeper and he coolly slipped the ball low into the net. The second, ten minutes later came from the penalty spot after hand ball. The Mallards adapted better to the windy conditions with Ruairi Corrigan and Andrew Farrell in defence rarely troubled. John Currie and Lee Walker both tested the keeper but the Mallards couldn’t add to the 2 – 0 half time score.

The second half continued in the same vein and Hoy completed his hat trick when he received a through ball from Corrigan, beat the last defender and hammered in past the diving keeper. James Turley and Lee Walker both brought good saves from the keeper but with 15 minutes remaining Hoy scored his fourth. He latched onto another through ball, this time from Niall Wallace and his powerful shot was too much for the keeper. With 5 minutes remaining Clive Crompton pulled one back for Dergview with a well executed overhead kick which gave Andrew Nevin no chance. Immediately from the kick off Hoy gathered the ball in midfield, drove forward and finished off the scoring with a trademark 25 yard drive to leave the final score 5 - 1 to the Mallards.

Lisnaskea 1 – 4 B’mallard 23.06.08

B’mallard returned to winning ways against league winners Lisnaskea on Monday night with a convincing 4 – 1 victory. On 15 minutes John Joe Strain was tackled when about to shoot and the ball went for a corner. From the corner the ball was deflected onto the bar and cleared. The Mallards got the breakthrough when Chris Sheridan curling shot from the corner of the penalty area found the top corner. Lee had 2 shots saved and John Currie had a goal ruled out for offside as the Mallards finished the half in control.

Within minutes of the restart a Sheridan cross was punched out to John Edgar who scored with a left foot volley to double the lead. Lee Walker made it 3 – 0 after getting on the end of an Edgar cross but Lisnaskea were unlucky minutes later when a rasping Colin Kennedy drive rebounded off the bar to safety. With 15 minutes remaining Johnny Hoy gathered the ball in midfield, beat a defender and his 25 yard shot sailed into the top corner. Strain saw red for dissent before Andy Little pulled one back with a well taken goal from inside the penalty area.

Killen U15’s 4 – 1 B’mallard 18.06.08

Ballinamallard slumped to a 4 – 1 defeat to Killen following this lack lustre performance. In the opening minute they found themselves 1 – 0 down after losing possession on the edge of the penalty area and Keith Harkness’s sweet strike found the corner of the net. Straight from the break John Joe Strain found the net but the effort was harshly ruled off for offside. With 15 minutes gone a long cross into the Mallards penalty was not dealt with and Jamie Sproule scored from close range. Strain had a header well saved but it was Killen who continued to play the better football and before half time they scored their third with a Ryan Mayse shot from outside the penalty area.

In the second half the Mallards began creating chances with Ruairi Corrigan having a header cleared off the line and John Edgar‘s shot going wide. However with 15 minutes remaining Killen got their fourth with a low driven free kick through the defensive wall. The Mallards pulled one back when a Strain run and goal bound shot was deflected into the net and this was quickly followed by an effort from Brian Owens which the Killen keeper did well to keep out. Before the end John Currie had an effort go narrowly wide and Hoy was denied by a last ditch tackle but Killen deservedly ran out 4 – 1 winners.

Fivemiletown 0 – 3 B’mallard Youth - 04.06.08

Three second half goals helped Ballinamallard Youth overcome a weakened but stubborn Fivemiletown on Wednesday night. Fivemiletown rarely threatened in the first half and but for some excellent goalkeeping the Mallards would have sealed the game by half time. Johnny Hoy, Lee Walker, Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain all had efforts well saved as the Mallards controlled the midfield but couldn’t find the opening goal. On the stroke of half time Mallard’s keeper Nevin was out quickly to clear in a rare moment of danger.

With 5 minutes gone in the second period Johnny Hoy settled the nerves with a trademark 30 drive to open the scoring. As in the first half the Mallards dominated with James Turley having a header saved and Walker and Owens narrowly heading over. Ten minutes from the end the Mallards were awarded a penalty for hand ball and Owens converted. In the dying minutes Walker rode two tackles on the edge of the penalty area and stroked the ball under the keeper to leave the final score 3 – 0.

B’mallard 5 – 0 Mountjoy – 19.05.08

B’mallard had a comfortable victory on Monday night with Brian Owens coolly converting an early penalty after a hand ball in the penalty area. The pace of the front two of John Joe Strain and Lee Walker were causing Mountjoy problems and it was Walker who made it 2 – 0 with a fierce shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Just before the break Johnny Hoy got on the score sheet with thunderous 25 yard shot.

The start of the second half saw a series of corners for the home team and from one of these John Edgar found the net with a looping header to make it 4 – 0. Mountjoy rarely troubled the Mallard defence with Matthew McConkey and Ben Brown looking solid. Just before the final whistle Edgar went on another surging run through the middle and finished with an accurate chip from 25 yards to seal the victory.

U15’s Lisbellaw 1 – 8 B’mallard 07.05.08

B’mallard had a straightforward victory away to Lisbellaw with Chris Sheridan opening the scoring in the opening 5 minutes. This was quickly followed by goals from Andrew Farrell who reacted quickly after a Matthew McConkey shot was well saved and Lee Walker. Just before the break Strain headed home from a Sheridan cross.

After the break Sheridan headed against the post but the Mallards got their fifth following fine interchange play from John Currie and Johnny Hoy and Strain was on hand to score. Lisbellaw pulled one back with an unstoppable shot from Stephen Miller from the edge of the penalty area but Hoy made it 6 – 1 after being put through by Currie and rounding the keeper. Ryan O’Sullivan from 20 yards and Strain, who completed his hat trick, finished the scoring.

B’mallard ‘B’ 1 – 5 B’mallard ‘A’ 9.4.08

B’mallard ‘A’ took control of this game against their ‘B’ team in the opening 5 minutes with Alonso Houlihan scoring from 6 yards after good build up play from Matthew McConkey and Johnny Hoy. Nathan Wallace in the ‘B’s nets was much the busier keeper and twice smothered shots from Houlihan to save likely goals as the ‘A’s dominated. As the game wore on the ‘B’ team settled with Ryan Sandford and Aaron Little at the back giving solid performances. In the last minute of the half an Andrew Farrell shot from outside the penalty area took a wicked deflection into the net giving Wallace no chance.

Niall Wallace’s in swinging corners were causing the ‘B’s problems throughout the game and it was from here that the ‘A’s increased their lead with the ball going in despite keeper Wallace getting his fingers to it. Hoy scored shortly after with a rasping shot from 20 yards which went in off a post and Houlihan would have had his second but for a good save. At the other end David Fitzpatrick got on the end of a corner and scored past Andrew Sheridan to make it 4 -1. The ‘A’s scored their fifth in the dying seconds following neat passing between Lee Walker and John Currie which ended with Hoy scoring his second low to the keepers left.

B'mallard 7 - 2 E'killen Town 2.4.08

Four goals in the opening ten minutes set the stage for this first game of the new season. Within a minute E’killen Town were awarded a free kick 20 yards out. The resulting shot struck the wall but rolled to the corner of the six-yard box where Mark Burns reacted quickly to hook the ball past Andrew Nevin in nets. Minutes later a quickly taken corner saw Chris Sheridan cross to John Currie whose accurate lob beat Joe McGovern in the Town goal. The Mallards took the lead when a Charlie Mitten long ball was met by John Joe Strain who interchanged passes with Johnny Hoy. Strain was set free and he cooly finished past McGovern. With less than ten minutes on the clock Town were awarded a penalty after a push in the penalty box and Niall Shannon’s kick into the roof of the net gave Nevin no chance. Just before half time Strain scored twice more after being released by Dean Cochrane and Charlie Mitten with similar through balls.

The Mallards continued to create chances in the second half and John Edgar made it 5 – 2 with an unstoppable 20 yard drive. In the final minutes Lee Walker and Strain each scored and but for a series of terrific saves from McGovern the score would have bigger.
